Unboxing-Lite! A few things from Club Tissus / The Fabric Club.

fabric unboxing

A little while ago I was on the hunt from some Zorb fabric for a super special top secret project I’m working on. I wanted to find it within Canada to save on shipping and get it quickly as I am very impatient.

One of the first shops that popped up in my search was The Fabric Club / Club Tissus (en francais!). I’ve seen this shop many times but hadn’t ordered from them. As the name implies, you can purchase a “club” membership which gets you special pricing. This is similar to Fabricland stores (Canadian chain) sewing club card, which get you a special discount (and special sales, etc). I didn’t buy the membership at this time, but it was tempting!

I am trying to be more conscious of my consumer consumption, so I’m trying to buy just what I need for a project, as opposed to what I want. So I got a little bit of Zorb, a bit of PUL, some really nice printed modal jersey and a beautiful teal cotton lycra jersey. The modal is very much as I expected, super soft, light and airy. The cotton jersey was quite solid, similar to the Luxe Jersey I like from the Fabric Snob. It has a fairly sturdy hand, but still lots of stretch and quite soft.

I was quite happy with the turn around on this little order. I ordered it on the Thursday before Good Friday, and received it the following Friday. So, despite the holidays, I still got it in about a weeks time from Quebec to Ontario!

I just pulled everything out of the dryer and am excited to get started on my top secret special project. Comment below if you have an idea what I’ll be making!

I’ve often heard it said in many of my sewing/knitting/crochet groups that the act of buying fabric/yard/patterns and the act of sewing/knitting/crocheting are two different hobbies. And I couldn’t agree more… I just love the possibilities that a new yard or two of fabric holds!

I also am always looking for new Canadian sources of fabric. Over the past couple of years I’ve found a couple shops that have become a go-to when looking for new prints and basics. During one of my many searches, I came across Bibs & Boots Fabric, which is based out of Saskatchewan.

The thing that first drew me to this shop was their selection of bamboo jersey & rib knits. They have lots Euro knits and some customs too!

So, about a week or two ago, I was looking for some fabrics to sew up a couple samples of a new pattern I’m working on (and some things for my own personal use), so I thought I’d give them a try!

I purchased 4 different rib knits. They all have a great feel and the dainty florals are perfect for what I have in mind.

This is my second “Unboxing” video I’ve uploaded to my Youtube Channel. I usually get so excited on fabric delivery day that I tear into the box before even thinking to press record, but I’m going to try to share more of these with you! One of my favourite things about buying from smaller companies like this one is the personal touches they add, like a had written note or a little surprise gift. I try to do that with my own business. A hand written note just gives you that bit of connection with the person on the other end of the purchase!

Let me know if there are any other shops you’d be interested in seeing!

Floral Love

Design Diary, Lingerie

Did you guys know I love florals?

hehe… sorry, I had to!

Girl Charlee sent me some samples of their new cotton spandex floral fabrics a few weeks ago and I am so excited to show you what I made! I had to laugh when they contacted me to let me know about their new prints, because I had already purchased several meters of the black colourway! However, after seeing the white, I actually think I might like it even more than the black, and I love a dark floral.

The prints I used are their new exclusive Bonny Floral (the white) and Orleans Rose (Black).

Cotton Spandex Jersey is my favourite fabric for day-to-day lingerie. It’s nice and stretchy and forgiving, allows the body to breathe yet the resiliency of the spandex provides enough support to be comfortable. I do like to line my cotton spandex bras in a solid stretch mesh as it gives a bit more support.  The only downside I occasionally find is that it can be on the thicker side, which can cause panty lines, so I tend to pair it with sheer or lace fabrics over the hips and derrière.

For the white colourway, I paired it with peach stretch lace. I used my Celeste Pattern with the lace back variation, and added a longline band to the Jasmine “Prism” bra (I’ll explain more in my next post!).

I kept it simple for the dark floral, using my Claudia Panties with sheer peach mesh across the hips and contrasting black fold over elastic around the waist and legs. I did a sheer mesh insert at the front of my Jasmine Bra.

I’m really happy with how these worked out and was excited to get a sneak preview of them. I love fabric, so I’ll jump on any chance I get to see something new!

I’ve been finishing up a lot of odds and ends over the last few days. We had a really busy weekend and I’m looking forward to having a day off with Isabel tomorrow. We’ve been doing lots around the house and the gardens are keeping me busy (despite all of the rain we’ve been having!). I’ve found my anxiety has been slipping over the last few weeks again. I’ve been trying to maintain my self-care routines, such as exercise and eating well, but I’ve been waking up at night obsessing over things. My doctor and I decided to up my medication, so I am hoping that this is just a little blip! In the mean time, I’m trying to just practice some self-compassion, keep my chin up and know that this too shall pass!  Making pretty things helps though, and so does sharing these things with all of you.

Old vs. New

Design Diary, Lingerie

Do you ever re-visit fabrics?

I bought this doe printed french terry before Isabel was born (I remember this because I made her a newborn dress out of it!), and really fell in love with it. I loved it so much, I ordered several more yards.

Two years ago, I released a lingerie set using the Doe Fabric. I paired it with champagne scalloped lace and did my classic hipster and longline bralette.

I was going through my fabric stash a couple of months ago and re-discovered it. I decided it was time for a revamp.

This time I paired it with simple beige mesh on the bottom and a small lace applique on the top. I think I prefer this new incarnation of the ‘Doe’ Set.

I like reinventing old styles. I find it to be a fun design challenge. I often draw so much of my inspiration from the fabrics themselves, that I like to find interesting ways to coordinate or display a print or colour.

The Doe Bra and Panties are available individually or as a set in my Etsy Shop.
