Introducing Tundra

Design Diary, Lingerie, New Items, Sewing Patterns

Warning… sultriness ahead! This pattern is not for the faint of heart.

I’ve had a few requests for a few “sexier” pieces, and I think this is the jackpot.  They are layerable, adjustable, and just plain fun to wear and experiment with.

Shown here layered under my Lilith Shrug, pattern is coming soon!

Introducing Hunter

Lingerie, New Items, Sewing Patterns

Ok, every time I make a new underwear pattern I proclaim that this pattern is my favourite. Seriously though, these undies are my honest to goodness favourite as far as comfort goes! I’m wearing a pair in bamboo jersey right now. They are just perfect for my shape!

The Hunter Underwear Pattern is a pretty easy sew as far as lingerie goes. They have a simple FOE waistband and an elastic stabilized hem. The trickiest part of these is sewing the triangular insert, but I’ve got a video on how to do just that! This technique is a good one to know whether you’re sewing this pattern, my Clara Sleep Mask Pattern, or any other project that has sharp, inset corners.

I’ve been liking these for wearing under leggings when I go running. The elasticized hem stays put on my body shape and the mid-rise is really comfortable on my non-apologetically soft 35 year old mom stomach.

I really like this pattern. It’s basically what I’m all about… simplicity! To me, simple = sexy, or at least that’s how it makes me feel which is the important part, right? I’ve been stocking up my underwear drawer in these sewn in bamboo because it’s silky, soft, and lightweight, but I’ve recently ordered some thermal knits that I’m excited to experiment with for winter!

For a limited time, you can get the pattern for 25% off here and through Etsy.

Happy Sewing!

Belle Undies & Camisole Pattern has arrived!

Baby, Design Diary, New Items

It’s done! And I’m super late to post about it!

I made this pattern about two years ago when I started thinking about getting Isabel out of diapers. I’ve sewed it a lot. And since grading it in different sizes, I’ve sewn it for friends kids too!  This little pattern has gotten a lot of use around here.

The Belle Pattern is really easy. The trickiest part is sewing the fold over elastic, but if you’ve sewn with it before, these will be a breeze for you.

The instructions will walk you through how to sew the top with either a lace or FOE neckline. The undies are a super simple cut. Roomy, but perfect for under leggings and jeans.

I really hope you enjoy sewing these as much as I do. They are so quick to put together. It’s the perfect “my kid is napping and I want to make something” project. I currently have this pattern available in 2T-5T, but hope to release bigger kid sizes in the future.

You can purchase the pattern on Etsy or directly through my website!

Introducing… The Ultimate Sleep Mask Pattern

Sewing Patterns, Uncategorized

Sleep masks are something that I added to my Lingerie Shop a couple years ago. Over the years, I like to think I’ve perfected my technique and learned a thing or two about how to put a nice mask together. Sleep Masks are something that I have a lot of fun sewing. I like taking a basic pattern and figuring out small changes I can make to turn it into something really unique.
You might remember me talking (or ranting on twitter) about my battles with some pretty hardcore insomnia over the years. Whenever I feel a bout of sleeplessness coming on, I thrown on my favourite sleep mask. Something about the ritual of putting it on helps put me in the mindset for sleep. Well, that and Sleep With Me Podcast (a serious life saver). So, I can truly say that these are personally tried and tested (and loved).

I wanted to add a few patterns to my Pattern Shop that would be more suitable for people who are just learning how to sew. The Ultimate Sleep Mask Pattern does require you to have some basic sewing skills, like how to use a sewing pattern, how to cut fabric, and the basics of how to sew a seam, but other than that, it is a great starting point!

My Sleep Mask Pattern makes use of materials and supplies you can find at almost any sewing shop. You may even be able to get everything you need at your local craft store! It just takes a small amount of fabric, (a fat quarter will do!), some cotton for lining, cotton quilt batting, and a strip of any type of elastic (though I like to use Fold Over Elastic). One of my pattern testers even suggested using long ribbons for ties. I’ve done something similar on one of my Silk Sleep Masks.

The Ultimate Sleep Mask Pattern allows you to make a basic mask, with tips on using lightweight fabrics like satin, a mask with sleep-eye embroidery, or cute little animal masks in the shape of a kitty, bear, fox, and bunny. I already have plans on a quick and easy tutorial on how to make a Panda mask! I’ve even had the idea of cutting little eye holes to make fun costume masks for kids.

I’ve spent a lot of time and attention on providing some extra in-depth photos for this latest collection of patterns. I have tried to make my instruction manuals both useful and beautiful! I really hope you enjoy sewing this pattern. I think it’s something a little different (and also makes a great handmade gift! I’m currently in the process of making a batch out of some heirloom fabric for a friend).

Sweet Dreams!

It’s finally here… (almost)

It’s here! It’s pretty much here! I’ve drafted, tested, graded, trued, sewed samples, tested, received feedback, edited and edited and edited, photographed, and edited some more… but it’s here (basically). I’ve listed all but one of my new patterns in my Etsy Shop.

I’ll be adding one final pattern next week. It just needs one little tweak. I just couldn’t wait any longer. I am impatient.

Last Tuesday I did a really fun photoshoot with my beautiful friend/cousin, who modelled for me, and my friend Susie.  It was my first time photographing a model, and to make my life extra challenging, I decided I wanted a diffuse back lighting.  I’m excited to show you my new things! I’ll be posting about them piece by piece, but in the mean time, feel free to shop the collection HERE.

A few kits just landed in the shop…

Last year I had the opportunity to teach a class at the Design Exchange in Toronto! It was fun and a gigantic learning experience for me. Teaching is something I really enjoy and I hope to do a class again someday.

I really wanted to run a sale in my lingerie shop… but Dan informed me that I am crazy. With moving, a teething one year old, and the orders I already have, I guess it would be a little much… So, I apologize about that! I promise I’ll get back to my game soon. Isabel is starting day care soon and I’m excited to get back to my normal work pace.

Kollabora + Long Weekend

Uncategorized

I recently joined Kollabora… it has been on my “to do” list forever, but I am so glad I finally got around to it! It is an amazing, inspiring site. I’ve spent so much time already browsing through people’s makes and getting ideas for my own wardrobe… If you are a maker, you should definitely be on Kollabora. It’s an amazing combination of the best of Pinterest and Etsy, combined in to one beautifully designed site.

A sample of what you’ll find on Kollabora!

I am also now selling my patterns on Kollabora and have been featured on their blog! It was a fun interview, and I got to talk a bit about what inspires me, advice for other designers, and what’s in store for the future! You can read my feature here.

Today is the last day of a long weekend here. It’s been one of the nicest long weekends I’ve had in a while.  Dan was off all weekend so we got to do lots of family things. We went for a short hike in Scouts Valley, went to a carnival on the waterfront and ate chip-truck poutine (which is the best poutine), and today went to the Zoo! Isabel LOVED the zoo. Her favourite animals were the giraffes and baby goats (the baby goat nibbled her fingers). I also started a new workout routine that has left me feeling old, sore, and terribly out of shape (stairs are the enemy right now). I had intended on sneaking in some work this afternoon, but I’m too tired.

Forest hikes, carnival, flamingos.

I’m enjoying Isabel even more as she grows. She’s cruising around furniture right now, able to pull her self up and down. She crawls so fast and is hard to keep up with! She’s already starting to want to do everything by herself, especially when it comes to feeding, so she’s mostly eating soft finger foods right now. It’s great, in a way… she mostly feeds herself, but also ends up feeding Oliver an awful lot of what she’s supposed to be eating.  I’m having a hard time thinking of foods that are soft and easy to eat, and that she can eat with her hands. So, if anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to leave me a comment!

Lingerie Anatomy

Tutorial
One of the tricky parts of lingerie making is sourcing all of the supplies! Still to this day, I order my supplies from all over the world… shipping can get expensive and sourcing everything is time consuming (this is just one of the reasons why handmade lingerie is a little more costly).
Almost all lingerie requires a variety of elastic. A bra alone requires strap elastic, band elastic, and trimming elastic.  Most bras require a hook and eye closure and you need the ring and slider hardware to assemble your straps. To make matters a little more tricky, all of the elastic comes in a variety of widths, from 1/4″ and up!

Rings and Sliders – I like to use nylon coated metal rings and sliders. They come in a variety of colours and sizes. I always prefer to use metal over plastic for durability.

Strap Elastic – Generally plush on one side (the side that goes against your skin), and matte or shiny on the exterior. It comes in various widths, with the standard being 1/2″.

Bra Back Closures – These hook and eye closures come in various sizes, with the average being 2×3 hooks.  The inside of these are plush, so they’re soft against your skin.

Fold Over Elastic – I like to use fold over elastic for finishing the upper edge of bras and for waist and leg lines of panties. It comes in a million shades of elastic, and if you can apply binding, you can apply fold over elastic.

Band Elastic – Just as the name implies, it goes around the band, or lower edge of the bra. One side is soft and plush and it often has a decorative edge. Band elastic comes as narrow as 1/4″, and up to 1″ wide. My preference is 1/2″, or 3/4″ for larger bust sizes.

I’ve assembled some kits, in black, ivory, pink and navy, that contain all of the most often needed lingerie supplies in the most common sizes. Each kit contains 1/2″ strap elastic, with 1/2″ ring and slider set, 1/2″ plush band elastic, satin fold over elastic, a 2×3 hook and eye closure, and two satin bows, hand tied by yours truly. There is enough elastic to complete 1 bra and 1 pair of panties.

In addition to the kits, I’ve added a few remnant grab bags to my sewing pattern shop. I’ve been cleaning out my sewing room, and found a lot of odds and ends. These bags contain various elastics in various lengths and are perfect for practice and small projects. The elastic in these vary in length from 14″ to as much as 2 yard lengths.
